PA may pull plug on smart meters

(Port Angeles) – The Port Angeles city council takes up the future of smart meters tonight.
The council could decide to enter into a standstill agreement with the contractor hired nearly four years ago to put in the meters in a pilot program.
In January this year, the city informed the contractor it was in breach of its contract after the smart meter program floundered.
City staff say the contractor has requested time to provide an acceptable cure plan, and during subsequent communications, both sides discussed an option to terminate the contract.
The first step of a termination is the standstill agreement.
City staff are recommending the council approve the agreement and also authorize an amendment with a second contractor to help with the final negotiations with the city's first smart-meter contractor. That arrangement is not to exceed $140-thousand dollars.
