(Port Angeles) – The Port Angeles School Board has accepted a committee report that recommends re-establishing a three-grade middle school.
This week, the board was presented with the Long-Range Facilities Task Force report that looked at ways to more efficiently use the school district's buildings.
The board unanimously accepted the recommendation to make elementary schools kindergarten through fifth grade, middle school sixth through eighth and high school ninth through 12th-grade.
A number of years ago, the school district moved sixth grade out of middle school to consolidate facilities due to declining enrollment.
The proposal also calls for eventual closure of one elementary school.
The board emphasized the latest proposal is a long-range goal and could be years before it is implemented.
The school board will use the information as it decides what type of bond measure to put before voters next year.
The task force will meet for three more weeks to take a closer look at a kindergarten through 8th grade school building model and plans to bring that information back to the board later.
