(Victoria, BC.) – Washington’s Governor is taking Canadian authorities to task over pumping of raw sewage into the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Gov. Jay Inslee and King County's executive yesterday sent a letter to British Columbia's Premiere with concerns about the city of Victoria continuing to pump untreated sewage into the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
KING-TV reports the letter comes after plans to build a sewage treatment facilities for Victoria fizzled.
20 years ago, plans were announced that Victoria would begin building a plant for primary and secondary sewage treatment.
In 1993, Washington state called for boycotts of Victoria over the sewage issue. That prompted talks between Washington and BC that primary sewage treatment would be in place in Victoria by 2002 and secondary by last year.
Canadian officials say they continue to meet to try to get the plans back on track.
