Fake kidnapping videographers in court

June 13th, 2014 - 5:40am

(Port Angeles) Two Port Angeles cousins and one of the boys' mother are due back in court next week to face misdemeanor charges in the kidnapping hoax videotaped at a Sequim park.

Jason and Jesse Holden and Shellie Baskins were released on their own recognizance yesterday from Clallam County District Court. They were set to be arraigned yesterday on disorderly conduct charges for videotaping a fake kidnapping of a child at Carrie Blake Park. But there are questions over what the penalty would be for the crime. District Court Judge Rick Porter says the case will be reconvened June 19th.

In April, Jason Holden donned a masked and grabbed a younger male relative at the park. The Holdens videotaped it and tore off in a waiting van.

The Holdens say the video was the latest in a series posted on YouTube done for humor and shock value. They said the fake kidnapping was meant to raise awareness about child abductions.

The case has garnered international attention.

The Holdens say they're upset Sequim's city attorney first chose not to file charges, then changed his mind more than a month after the incident.
