Dumpster fire generates 9-1-1 calls east of PA

(Port Angeles) – A fire that started in a large commercial size garbage dumpster generated numerous 9-1-1 calls today east of Port Angeles.

The fire combined with large amounts of smoke in the lumberyard area of Hartnagel’s Building Supply at 3111 East Highway 101 was highly visible from the highway leading into Port Angeles.

PenCom, the 9-1-1 communications center, reported receiving “numerous” 9-1-1 calls from people driving by the scene.

Initial reports stated the fire was within three feet of a large propane tank in the lumberyard.

Clallam County Fire District 2 Firefighters responded with 6 firefighters and a Chief Officer to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters kept the fire contained to the large dumpster however had to use over 35-hundred gallons of water due to the amount of debris in the dumpster.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Dan Huff, the cause of the highly visible fire was left over embers from briquettes dumped after a barbeque held at the lumberyard the day before.

The barbeque was sponsored by a deck supply vendor to thank contractors and customers for their support.

Firefighters remained on scene for about two hours to assure no flare ups would occur.
