Clallam County gets state money for compost program

(Port Angeles) -- The Department of Ecology just handed out over $1-million dollars worth of grants throughout the State for 24 projects aimed at waste management.

Clallam County was one of 10 regional grants from the DOE, with an award of $12,069-dollars. $4,302 is slated for a rural recycling initiative with the remaining $7,767 to be used for compost demonstration sites. County Waste Management Coordinator, Meggan Uecker says The grants were awarded in four categories that included: Solid Waste Enforcement, Waste Reduction and Recycling, Organics, defined as yard and food waste and land-clearing debris and Moderate-risk Waste which includes waste that is considered hazardous but small in volume.
