Sinkholes developing at PA beach

July 14th, 2014 - 6:22am

(Port Angeles) No one can figure out yet what is causing sinkholes to suddenly develop at Hollywood Beach in Port Angeles.

Late last week, the city posted warning signs that sinkholes were developing at the beach next to City Pier.

Crews removed an old aluminum pipe thought to be causing the problem. But instead of the tide filling the hole with sand, the sinkholes continue to widen.

At least three sinkholes have been discovered in the area. They are mostly below the normal tide line, but can be dangerous during low tides.

Next, crews will study the water that is forming in the holes to try to determine if they may be part of a spring system or not.

The beach is on a part of the harbor that was filled in decades ago.

The city is calling in other experts to take a look at the situation.
