Unemployment rates drop locally
July 23rd, 2014 - 5:30am
(Port Angeles) – Unemployment rates in Clallam County have dipped below seven percent for the first time in years.
According to stats released from the state, the county's unemployment rate in June was 6.7 percent. That's down from 8.1 percent in May.
The dip in unemployment is attributed mainly to a spike in hiring among the tourism industry as the area geared up for the summer season. The size of the workforce in the area dropped as did the number of people searching for a job last month as well.
June's unemployment rate is the lowest for Clallam County in more than three years. In June 2013, the unemployment rate was at 9.3 percent.
Jefferson County's unemployment fell to 6.3 percent in June.
Statewide, the unemployment rate is at 5.8 percent.
