Sheriff warns of jury-duty phone scam

July 24th, 2014 - 6:20am

(Port Angeles) -- The Clallam County Sheriff's Department is warning of a jury-duty phone scam.

In the ruse, the scammer poses as a sheriff's deputy, in an attempt to obtain personal information.

Chief criminal deputy Ron Cameron says the scam came to light after a local resident received a phone call from an individual who identified himself as a Clallam County Sheriff's deputy.

The sheriff's department does not make phone calls to obtain such personal information and urges anyone who is contacted in such a way to simply end the call, and contact the appropriate law enforcement agency.

To learn more about protecting yourself against fraud and telephone scams, you can go to either the Washington State Attorney General's Office web site, as well as the site for the Federal Trade Commission.
