Sutherland property owners to continue milfoil fight

August 14th, 2014 - 5:33am

(Port Angeles) Property owners at Lake Sutherland have overwhelmingly approved continuing taxing themselves to fight an invasive weed.

Owners voted 88 percent in favor of continuing the Lake Sutherland Management District.

The district assesses each parcel 50 dollar a year to fund efforts to eradicate Eurasian Milfoil. Property owners were sent ballots last month and the results were tallied this week.

Clallam County noxious weed control coordinator Cathy Lucero says past efforts to remove the fast growing underwater plant have been successful, but more control is needed to prevent its growth in the 300-acre lake, west of Port Angeles. It was discovered in Lake Sutherland in 2000. In 2004, area residents formed the management district when a state grant to control the plant expired.

The lake management district was renewed in 2009 at the same annual rate of 50 dollars.
