Final parts of Elwha dams to be blasted this week

August 26th, 2014 - 5:30am

(Port Angeles) The last of the Glines Canyon Dam on the Elwha River will be gone this week.

Crews plan to ignite the final blasts taking the final few feet of the dam foundation out of the river.

It's the last of the structure that once stood 210 feet tall. It's also the last of the barriers for fish runs from two dams that once held back the Elwha.

After the blast, crews will pull out the concrete. It'll be eventually hauled to a Clallam County gravel pit, where it will be pulverized and used for other projects.

The lower, Elwha Dam, came down two years ago. Removal of the dams was part of a $325 million river restoration project supporters hope will eventually restore healthy salmon and steelhead runs in the river.
